to Verify Healthy
Food Items In Restaurants and
Food outlets in Abu Dhabi
In collaboration with Abu Dhabi Food
Control Authority (ADFCA), HAAD is
adding the Weqaya logo to healthy food
items on restaurants’ menus. Healthy Food
Items are usually low in fat, low in salt and
rich in Fibre.
Commenting on the program launch,
Dr. Jalaa Taher, Manager of Non-
communicable Diseases Department
at HAAD said: “The Weqaya Nutrition
program contributes to the reduction of
risk factors associated with major non-
communicable diseases such as Heart
Diseases, Blood pressure, Diabetes, and
Cancer, through public awareness on
health food options available in restaurants
and food outlets.”
“The program complements HAAD
Schools Nutrition Program “Eat Right Get
Active” targeting school students in the
Emirate of Abu Dhabi to teach children
what it means to eat healthily and be
physically active, in addition to school
canteen guidelines, a joint project with Abu
Dhabi Education Council and Abu Dhabi
Food Control Authority, applied across
Abu Dhabi schools.”
During the pilot phase of the Weqaya
Nutrition Program, 11 restaurants placed
the Weqaya logo beside healthy food items
in their menus. HAAD conducted a survey
in one of the participating restaurants with
124 customers. 71 percent of participants
said that they were keen on selecting
healthy meals from the menu, while 95
percent confirmed their understanding of
its meaning, and 68 percent expressed their
satisfaction with the availability of healthy
food options.
HAAD recognised restaurants and food
outlets for their participation and support
in the pilot phase of the program. The list
recognised program supporter LiFe Line
Hospitals Group and APi CAE Gourmet,
Abu Dhabi Country Club, Kelvin Catering,
Hilton Hotel, Mafraq Hotel, Al Mafraq
Hospital, Al Noor Hospital, D Club, Jones
the Grocer, Slices and Bite Rite.
According to World Health Organisation
statistics, Heart Diseases, Diabetes, Blood
pressure, and Cancer are the leading cause
of death with 36 million deaths a year
globally.
