Skin Conditions Could Be A Sign Of Something More Serious

Skin doesn’t seem very important but when you consider the protection that it offers your entire body and the fact that your skin is the largest organ in your body you can begin to see that taking care of your skin is a big deal. It may be hard to believe that your body has about two square yards of skin on it that weighs between 6 – 9 pounds but those are the facts and your skin is your body’s primary defense against bacteria and viruses.

It also helps to regulate your body temperature and contains lots of nerve endings that allow you to experience the world around you.


Once you realize how crucial skin is to survival you then understand how careful that you need to be with it. Anytime that the skin is broken there are ways of things to get into the body. It can just look like a small cot to you an me but it is also a doorway that can actually lead invaders all the way to your crucial internal organs. An infection can start within a small injury such as a cut and then makes its way through the body if not treated.

Most people at one time or another will deal with pretty common skin ailments. Although your acne might have caused you great grief as a teenager, it is relatively harmless. Other skin conditions can be managed with medication to the point that they are not even noticeable for the most part. If you been through flare ups of Psoriasis and eczema then calming it down is a huge relief. No one feels good about walking around with scabs and sores, even if they are not threatening.

Rashes and acne however can be a sign of a more serious condition and any rash that appears out of nowhere should be followed up with a visit to the doctor to ensure that it is not something more serious. Issues like rashes and hives can be a warning sign of an allergic reaction but there are also rashes like a butterfly facial rash that can be a warning sign of SLE or Systemic Lupus. Sepsis, Scarlet Fever, Fifth Disease, and Impetigo all present with a rash and several of these can become life threatening if left untreated. Of course, several venereal diseases present with rashes, not to mention Rheumatic Fever can also show a rash at the onset and can definitely be life threatening and cause heart issues down the road.

It is smart to remember that your skin is a crucial body part and can be a way of seeing what is going on inside of the body. It is so easy to take the time and visit the doctor when something is happening that you don’t understand. It could be nothing more than a seasonal rash and you can get a cream to calm it down. On the other hand it could be telling you that something else is going on that you need to treat immediately.
