Fashion Musings by Bollywood Fashion Designer Payal Singhal

A fashion designer with an enviable clientele list, Payal Singhal’s creations has been worn by a long list of celebrities including Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Deepika Padukone, and many more. Juxtaposing the needs of the modern-day woman with meticulous detailing, she has made her mark both in India and globally. Here she muses about upcoming fashion trends and personal style.

Background

“I launched my label Payal Singhal in 1999, at the age of 21, because I was bursting with ideas and was ready to take on the big bad world of fashion and it’s been almost 20 years and the passion still drives me every day.”

Wardrobe Must-haves

“The basic must-have wardrobe builders are a great pair of jeans, black pants, and a white shirt, but to accentuate those here are few of our suggestions:

  • A floral/geometric print scarf will accentuate any office/brunch /high tea look.
  • A statement embroidered short jacket that can be paired over denims or a lehenga.
  • Flare pants /dhoti pants/drape pants for a quick fusion look.
  • A fresh print kaftan dress or shirt style tunic to the rescue when in doubt.
  • An embroidered bustier/crop top that can be paired with any skirt or pants.

Sneak Peek into Trends

“Trends in India are functionally based on the festive and wedding season. Along with the styles and cuts of an outfit, the look and feel is equally important. A major trend this festive season is dhoti saris—they are cool, comfortable and versatile. Wear them with a crop top or shirt or even a sari blouse.”

“Pastels are trending too this year and it’s refreshing to know that the Indian bride does not want to be limited only to reds, pinks, and golds for her choices. The color palette for this season stays within the muted tones of yellows, pinks, peach, blues, and
mint paired with neutrals like grey, beige, nude, and off-whites.”

Personal Style

“Personal style to me is a reflection of who you are and it’s of course more obviously about the clothes you wear, but also about everything else you do. This is from the way you eat and drink to the way you decorate, and the life you live whether it’s simple or extravagant they all contribute to one’s personal style.”
