Start Moving More at Work

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), sitting for extended periods can increase your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. If you don’t have much free time during the work day, whether at the office or working remotely, these tips from global ergonomic office furniture designer Humanscale’s MENA managing director, Frazer Butcher, will help you be more active and boost your productivity.

Take the stairs

Challenge yourself to take five flights of stairs while at work. If you can manage five this week, perhaps aim for six next week. This will build your fitness and improve cardiovascular function. Take the stairs going up or down, as long as you get your blood pumping. We do, however, recommend wearing appropriate shoes, avoiding heels or flip-flops.

Mini movements to boost circulation

Encouraging movement with a foot rocker while you’re at your desk relieves lower back pressure and helps improve posture. There are even the added benefits of more muscle tone in your legs. When standing, using a foot mat helps disperse pressure throughout the body to increase circulation.

Stand-up meetings

Find areas at work where you can conduct some of your meetings standing up. This speeds up the pace of the meeting, increases blood flow, boosts your metabolism and improves posture. We guarantee you won’t miss chairs once you’ve given standing meetings a try.
