Jordan’s Minister of Social Development addresses IBA gathering of women lawyers in Amman

Today, in Amman, Jordan, delegates attending the International Bar Association (IBA) Initiative for Women Business Lawyers in the Middle East event will be addressed by a number of distinguished keynote speakers including HE Reem Abu Hassan, Minister of Social Development of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, HE Sharif Zu’bi, former Minister of Industry and Trade and former Minister of Justice and HE Mervet Tallawy, Director General of the Arab Women Organization (AWO).

The primary aim of the event, entitled Jordanian Women in Legal Professions: Challenges and Opportunities, is to bring together lawyers from across the Middle East to discuss standards and trends in the practice of law and strategies for developing an international legal practice. Aimed chiefly at lawyers in commercial law practice, the event is being held by the IBA in partnership with the Arab International Women’s Forum (AIWF) and the Arab Women’s Legal Network (AWLN). It has attracted the participation of more than 100 speakers and delegates primarily from Middle East countries

The line-up of speakers brings an extensive range of expertise to discussions from diverse sectors including government, civil society, private practice and corporate counsel.

HE Reem Abu Hassan is a lawyer and human rights activist who has focused on family protection and women’s empowerment throughout her career. Among many initiatives and accomplishments, she was a founding member of the AWLN and established the Human Rights and Family Affairs Directorate within the Ministry of Justice of Jordan. In her current role as Minister of Social Development she strives to continue her work as an agent for change and a human rights activist.

HE Sharif Zu’bi is a key figure both in law and in politics and was instrumental in the initiation of important legal reforms while in office. He is now a senior partner at the family firm.

HE Mervet Tallawy is an Egyptian diplomat and politician with a long career advocating for women’s rights. She served as ambassador of Egypt to Austria and Japan, was the Deputy Director of the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women and served as the Minister for Insurance and Social Affairs of Egypt. She took up the position of Director General of the Arab Women Organization earlier this year.

The IBA Initiative for Women Business Lawyers in the Middle East event, held Monday 7 September 2015 at the Kempinski Hotel, Abdul Hamid Shouman Street, Amman, Jordan,  is open to both male and female legal practitioners, without charge. Programme topics include: deciding on a career path and a specialism; how to access leadership positions; how to network effectively; successful marketing; business development and law firm management strategies; and issues of anti-corruption and corporate governance in the region.
