Gulf Medical University (GMU), having just
completed its fourteenth year as the first
private medical University to emerge in
the United Arab Emirates, I alongwith our
dedicated team of academic and medical
professionals are determined to help build
not only a fit society, but one with a wealth
of knowledge to match its prosperity. As a
young institution, most of GMU students are
still engaged on the arduous yet rewarding
six-year path towards becoming the medical
professionals of tomorrow.
A couple of high profiled visits to and
from GMU needs a mention here. Upon
the invitation from His Highness Dr.
Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan,
Advisor of His Highness UAE President &
Supreme Chancellor of Sultan Bin Khalifa
Humanitarian & Scientific Foundation, I
have had the honor to attend the private
ceremony of the high profile launch of
Shamsun Al Arabia Center & Website at the
Palace of His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin
Khalifa Al Nahyan, Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi.
We had the privilege to meet H.E. Mr. Max
Bjuhr, Ambassador, Embassy of Sweden
on his visit to the University. The visiting
dignitary was accorded a warm welcome
by me and Mr. Akbar Moideen, Director-
Operations Healthcare and Retail Division,
Thumbay Group.
I have been invited to participate as a Speaker
in the upcoming Ist International Conference
on Cooperation in Higher Education within
EURAS (Eurasian Universities Union) to
be held on the 9
& 10th May, 2013 at the
Florya Campus of Istanbul Aydin University,
Istanbul, Turkey.
As per the agreement between GMU and
The Neuro Spinal Hospital, Dubai a two day
Cadaveric Workshop on Minimally Invasive
Spinal Surgery was organized in the GMU
Anatomy lab. The workshop was conducted
by Dr. Abdul Karim Msaddi – Medical
Director, Neuro Spinal Hospital-Dubai.
Recently, GMU acquired memberships in
the Association of Arab University (AARU),
Amman Jordan and in the Eurasian
Universities Union (EURAS), Istanbul, Turkey.
Besides gaining recognition in the Arab
world, memberships in these institutions will
enhance further activities of GMU.
In continuation of its commitment to
excellence, GMU held a brief ceremony to
felicitate 10 leading dentists in the region for
their contribution to the field of dentistry and
their commitment and invaluable services
rendered to the society in front of an august
gathering attending the 5
Annual Dental
Conference on Excellence in Oral and Dental
Health hosted by the College of Dentistry.
All the above conferences/seminars held at
GMU have been accredited by the Ministry
of Health, U.A.E. I wish to thank the
Government of U.A.E. for their continued
support in hosting these significant events.
GMU is doing its part in living up to its
commitment - to raise the quality of higher
education and strengthen its contribution
to the regional development. A State-of-
the-Art Advanced Testing Center which is
one of the biggest in the region, equipped
with advanced technology to administer the
International Foundations of Medicine(IFOM)
I & II Examinations offered by the National
Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), USA
for the medical students in MBBS Program
which can benchmark student performance
using international standards has been set
up in our campus. I wish to inform all our
readers that we are the first in the region
to introduce an Examination Management
Software System called Examsoft under
licence from ExamSoft Worldwide Inc.
(USA). To this end we have signed an
agreement with National Board of Medical
Examiners (NBME), USA to administer the
exam for MBBS students for academic year
2013. The Center can also be utilized as an
educational testing service provider by other
institutions and organizations in U.A.E.
It is with delight I wish to inform all our dear
readers that the Commission for Academic
Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Higher
Education and Scientific Research, UAE
has approved our request for increase of
students intake for the Bachelor of Medicine
& Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the
existing 60 to 70 and Doctor of Dental
Medicine (DMD) programs from 35 to 50 for
the forthcoming academic year beginning
September 2013.
With an array of developments in recent
years, from the creation of promising
partnerships and social outreach to the
enhancement of facilities and academic
prowess, GMU is well on its way to fulfilling
the ambitions of its strategic plans.
