I wish you all a wonderful and a meaning-
ful year 2016.
Every year begins with a hope, a new vi-
sion, and a renewed determination to
succeed. At Gulf Medical University, we
are focused on our vision to succeed in
all our endeavors. We are quite aware
that our responsibility has grown and we
leave no stone unturned to ensure the
best for the future of our students.
At the recently held Graduation Cer-
emony, His Highness Sheikh Humaid
Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the
Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman,
awarded degree certificates to the Mas-
ters’ students, Medical, Physiotherapy,
Dental, and Pharmacy graduates, in the
presence of His Excellency Sheikh Na-
hayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister for
Youth and Culture, UAE and a host of of-
ficials, dignitaries, parents, and faculty
members. I wish to thank each one of
the guests who attended the function.
The External Advisory Board meeting
took place at the University which was
attended by experts from international
institutions.
Significant events at the University and
our hospitals have kept us busy over the
last few months. We have had visits by
eminent people including Dr. Veerendra
Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmastha-
la, India, and Senior Ministers from Kar-
nataka, including Mr. Ramnath Rai, Min-
ister for Environment and Ecology, Mr.
U. T. Khader, Minister of Health, and Dr.
Sharanprakash R. Patil, Minister State for
Medical Education. They were highly im-
pressed with the standards of education
and services offered by our institutions.
We are happy to inform that the Thum-
bay Group has formed a Board to im-
plement strategic plans. I will be chair-
ing the Board and Mr. Akbar Moideen
Thumbay, Vice President Healthcare
Division, Mr. Akram Moideen Thumbay,
Director Construction and Renovations
Division, Mr. Moideen Farhad C., Direc-
tor Hospitality Division and Mr. Nazeer
Hussain Patayath, Director Finance and
Budget will be members of the Board,
which will be the final decision making
body and will be responsible to formu-
late strategies for the group operations
all over the world.
We had senior officials Dr. Susan But-
tress, Associate Head School of Allied
Health Sciences and Dr. Margaret Cof-
fey, Reader in Public Health along with
Mr. Hassan Al Tug from the University
of Salford, UK to explore possible ar-
eas of collaboration with our College
of Allied Health Sciences and Center for
Advanced Biomedical Research and In-
novation.
Thumbay Hospital, Dubai has organized
community awareness events by hold-
ing a ‘Child & Parenting’ event as well
as the ‘Count Your Steps- Beat Diabetes’
program, which is endorsed by interna-
tional cricketers including Mr. Shoaib
Malik from Pakistan and Mr. Irfan Pathan
from India. They visited the Thumbay
Hospital, Dubai on different occasions
and interacted with their fans. Thum-
bay Group’s Human Resources Depart-
ment organized a major blood dona-
tion camp in collaboration with Sharjah
Blood Bank at GMC Hospital, Ajman as
part of a Corporate Social Responsibility
initiative.
GMU Students have observed several in-
ternational health days such as World Dia-
betes Day, World Polio Day, World Prema-
turity Day, and World Disability Day which
helped create awareness amongst their
peers and staff members.
The second annual Medical Tourism Con-
ference ‘Destination UAE – Health & Medi-
cal Tourism Hub, Partnership for Collabo-
rations’ was held at Thumbay Hospital,
Dubai. His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed
Maktoum Juma Al Maktoum, Chairman
– MBM Groups, Dubai inaugurated the
event and launched the Certificate course
in Medical Tourism Facilitator, a first-of-its-
kind program offered in the region.
I am happy to inform our readers that I
received a prestigious Indian Innovator
Award – Entrepreneur of the Year award
2015, under the ‘Innovator in Education’
category. The award was presented by
BNC Publishing, a part of the Entrepreneur
MENA franchise, in a glittering ceremony
in Dubai recently. My son Mr. Akbar Moi-
deen Thumbay, Vice President of the
Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group re-
ceived the award on my behalf.
Thumbay Group, UAE celebrated the 44th
UAE National Day with pomp and splen-
dor at the University campus. It witnessed
a delightful combination of games, con-
tests, food, and fun, which truly reflected
the ‘spirit of the union’.
