Q

Can you please share an inspirational patient/doctor story with our readers?

“Upon the third day of joining Thumbay hospital, Dubai, I had a 70-year-old patient who stopped walking for

one month after had had a fall which had caused a spinal fracture. The fracture was healed, however the spine

was deformed. The patient was operated on for three-level laminectomies, spinal jack, cement injection, and

spinal pedicular screw fixation and fusion. Post operation this patient developed acute pancreatitis, however

the good news is that the patient recovered and is currently in the phase of physiotherapy.”

Q

What are some reasons that

patients would visit you aside

from a broken bone?

“Some reasons patients would visit me

other than broken bones are for total joints

replacement and revision, arthroscopic surgery

of the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle and small

joints; sports related injuries, limb lengthening

and deformity correction, Ilizarov surgery,

pediatric orthopaedic surgery and congenital

anomalies, spinal surgery and instrumentation,

soft tissue surgery and joint preservation.”

Q

What are some aspects of your

specialty that many people are

not aware of?

“What is known as ‘Ilizarov surgery’ can be used for

the lengthening of limbs as well as the correction of

deformities. Also the 360 degrees spinal approach

and surgery as well as procedures including:

nucleoplasty, vertebroplasty, microdiscectomy,

spacer surgery for spinal root canal stenosis, spinal

jack and kyphoplasty. Also Total Joints Replacement

and Revision and Soft Tissue Surgeries and Joint

Preservation.

Q

What is the most challenging

aspect of your profession?

“This would have to be spinal surgery when

operating on the cord and major body nerves.”

Q

What is the most exciting part

of your job and why?

“I treat the patients. When they recover they are

grateful and express this gratitude by thanking

me. This is the time I feel I am making a positive

impact in the community.”
