Student Successes
Janhavi Sirsat
from Ajman writes: “Two years ago, it
was the first time research was introduced in our MBBS
course. As part of a continuous assessment assignment, a
research project was to be done for which a group of six
people was formed. After endless discussions, we decided
on the topic of ‘Prevalence of and factors associated with
back pain among high school students’. Our facilitator,
Prof. Jayakumary Muttappallymyalil, of the Community
Medicine Department of Gulf Medical University, without
whose guidance and support we probably wouldn’t
have achieved what we have today, introduced us to the
Global Healthcare Conference in Singapore. Receiving
an acceptance email for an oral presentation from the
conference felt like an accomplishment on its own. The
conference in Singapore spanned over two days, of which,
my presentation was towards the end of the second day.
From the feedback I received after my presentation, it was
quite gratifying to know that the audience could relate to
the study, since it was based on our personal experiences
as high school students. Winning the best student paper
award at the conference was certainly a dream come true
and will prove to be one of the strongest motivational
factors in all my future academic endeavors.”
