Five Ways to Eat Healthy Without Taking a Bite Out of Your Budget

Organic foods, whole foods, and health foods in general are great to enhance optimal well being, but can be expensive for many of us. Here are five easy ways to eat healthy, but stay within a budget.

Make Your Own

Even though ready meals are getting healthier, it is far cheaper to whip up an easy, but healthy meal in literally minutes. Make your own healthy pesto with basil, garlic, olive oil, Parmesan, and pine nuts blended together and add this to wholemeal pasta for an instant, but healthy meal in minutes.

Plan Ahead

Plan your weekly menu in advance and do your shopping according to this list. Shop during sales which take place usually during weekdays and stick to your list as a little planning goes a long way, and prevents wasteful spending triggered off by hungry shopping.

Stretch It Out

Select foods that stretch over a few meals – a whole roasted chicken can be used in fajitas one evening and then stir fried with some vegetables the next night. The bones leftover can be used to make homemade soup and a wholesome risotto.

Include Super Foods

Include antioxidant-full foods in your daily meal plan. Some of these include: colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and pulses. Add oats and barley to stews and soups to bump up the nutritional value very easily.

Think Before You Drink

For gym lovers and exercise addicts, energy drinks and fitness shakes are important; but again, can take a bite out of your budget. Why not do it yourself at home? Start with milk–full of protein and electrolytes– and blend in a banana and slightly cooked egg white with honey and you’ve got a perfectly balanced protein recovery drink. Or add equal amounts of water to pure unsweetened fruit juice with a dash of salt, which again makes an ideal post workout recovery drink.
