Strengthening the Mind-Body Connection with Sophrology

Sophrology is about a fully alert mind in a relaxed body. It studies human consciousness, its modifications and the means of varying it for it to be in harmony with itself and its environment.

Focusing on our corporeal sensations, we learn how to open the communication channels between our consciousness and our body. Becoming aware of our bodies, we learn how to recognize signs of tension and fatigue and we become capable to notice subtle signs of change. Corporeal awareness also means knowing when to make time for ourselves, relax and connect to inner peace.

Sophrology advocates a daily hygiene of dynamic meditation that brings about an increased level of wellbeing. Abdominal breathing, similar to the one of a baby when she first comes to the world, is the foundation of the work because it allows the body to let go of tensions and opens to the inner world. In order to break away from the constant noise of automatic thinking, we contemplate and observe our mind with our eyes closed and we develop the capacity to conjure positive sensorial perceptions in our inner world, thus producing inner peace.

Based on the principle of neuroplasticity, the well documented capacity of the brain to change, Sophrology proposes visualization exercises that with repetition, re-wire our brains to focus on what is positive, thereby maximizing our inner resources and the ability to move forward. The repetition of pleasurable experiences in the inner world, triggered by the awakening of the inner senses, produces comfort in the body that brings a positive presence in the outer world.

After a few sessions, students of Sophrology testify of an increased sense of wellbeing, more energy and a positive approach to life. Its practice is highly recommended to lower stress levels, improve concentration and sleep, manage emotions, overcome phobias, and improve self-esteem and self-confidence.

Even though Sophrology is not a substitute for medical or mental health treatments, it has been very successfully practiced in hospitals, schools and sports environments in Spain, France, Switzerland and Italy for almost fifty years with fantastic results. The Swiss sky team trained by Dr. Abrezol for the World Championship in 1972 for instance, won all the gold medals.

Sophrology offers effective tools and a pleasurable technique, a practice that can be easily integrated in a busy day and benefit everyone who wishes to be in harmony with oneself and the world.
