Stop Worrying if Other People Like You

So here’s the bad news, you cannot make people like, love, understand, validate, accept or be nice to you. And you can’t control them either. The good news- it doesn’t matter.

What is more important than the approval of people who don’t accept us for who we are, is being a genuine person. And if we still don’t get their likes, then they are not worth our time. There is no reason to be around anyone that makes you feel bad for being yourself.

So, how do you make sure you are behaving like you and not who you think you should be?

Step away from the screen

How can you know who you really are when the majority of your day is spent looking at other people? Comparison can be our worst enemy and it might be worthwhile stepping away from the social media while you figure out your true self. It’s wise to remember that the pictures on Instagram are rarely reflective of anyone’s life, so don’t let yourself fall into the trap of believing otherwise.

Make a list of what makes you you and stick with it

This is something I did recently and works as a helpful reminder when you lose yourself. Ask yourself- what makes me happy? What makes me sad? What goals do I want to achieve? Who do I spend the most time with and how would they describe me? How do I want to be remembered? What do I want to achieve and how am I making sure I achieve it? Once you’ve done that- the real you should become a little clearer.

Remove sorry from your vocabulary and replace with thank you

Replacing sorry with thank you is a great learning tool in appreciation. By saying for example, ‘thank you for being so patient’ instead of ‘sorry I’m late’ or ‘thank you for listening’ instead of ‘sorry for rambling’. You are you and you don’t have to apologize for it. Instead, show appreciation for those that love you just the way you are.
