Learning to Say NO

It sounds harsh, but learning where and when to say no is an art form that should be learned and cultivated. Here are some ways to say a firm, but polite no without coming across as aggressive or non-cooperative.

  • As this is a learned behaviour, it can be balanced by learning a positive attitude and behaviours to say “no”. This includes some healthy communication skills in being able to express their needs.
  • Be aware of your limits and needs and be honest with yourself about these.
  • It’s important to set healthy boundaries while being flexible enough to consider others within limits.
  • Learn to say “may I think about it” as this will give time to consider whether the task is possible or not.
  • It’s important to remember “no” is the right response in certain circumstances.
  • Understand your own need to say ”yes” and where it stems from, if required try and get professional help to manage the issues in the background.
