Food that Hits the Right Spot… Hurricane’s Grill At Dubai Mall

Hurricane’s Grill is a South African inspired Australian eatery brand that is family friendly, serving up humongous portions and lots of delicious comfort food that will satisfy even the most finicky of eaters.

The menu is split into starters, a kids section, seafood, sides, sauces, burgers, platters, and steaks. At this six-month-old eatery in Dubai, the interiors exude a certain industrial feel that still manages to maintain a warm, family friendly feel with direct views of the Dubai Fountains and the option to dine al fresco. A lot of thought has put in the food and even the beverages on the menu, which incidentally is all on iPads. Noel Daniels, the restaurant manager, was on-hand to explain that even each of the mocktails, for example, have a story behind them. The Pulque sprize—a refreshing agave syrup based drink, is rooted in Aztec culture while the Marikoriko—made of coconut cream, juice, and puree—is inspired by the creation of man.

From the starters, we chose the mushroom and cheese potato skins—which were gooey and ultra-cheesy,but with a crispy base. Then the cheesy garlic bread which we could not stop eating and the Cobb salad—a huge platter of different kinds of salads. The showstopper of the starters was the garlic prawns which came in a perfectly balanced buttery, yet mildly garlicky sauce with bread on the side that we dunked in the jus.

With the friendly guidance of our server, our mains were carefully curated as we were inching towards already being borderline full. We opted to try the half platter of signature beef ribs with steak, served with fried onions as well as mashed potatoes for the side and the traditional cod fish and chips. My daughter also chose a steak from the kids’menu; which are available in various cuts and types from Wagyu to fillet mignon with lots of sauces.

When Noel had told us the portion sizes are huge,he was not kidding. The mains arrived and we were overtaken by the size and the quality of the food. The beef ribs were super soft and succulent, with mildly sweet flavors which went really well with the simplicity of the mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked how we wanted it and was juicy and moreish. The fish and chips were a medley of crispy and tender and when dipped into the accompanying tartar sauce, were superb.

We were also bowled over by their spectacular desserts; we tried the special South African traditional Malva pudding which Noel explained was a traditional sponge cake drenched in caramel and apricot jam, then served with a side of custard and caramel sauce as well as a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. It was delicious and very comforting, encapsulating the balance of all of the flavors in one. The second sweet treat—the Mars Bars cheesecake was a super large slice of cheesecake with bit of Mars chocolate inside and on top. I had expected a sugar coma from this, but again, was pleasantly surprised to experience a perfect harmony of flavors and textures.

The Verdict: Hurricane’s Grill has become a unanimous family favorite now; with the delicious food and massive portions, even the service here makes you feel right at home. Take your family and go with big appetites; you will not be disappointed!
