Baker & Spice – Organic Brasserie at Souk Al Bahar

With a strong focus on sustainability and curbing food wastage, Baker & Spice is not only a lovely place to go for delicious Mediterranean food, it’s also 90 percent organic and everything from the vegetables to the spices is locally sourced. With five venues in the UAE, Baker & Spice also hosts the original farmer’s markets in UAE and fully supports local farms wherever possible to bring that ‘farm to the table’ dining experience.

We sat outdoors right in front of the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain so we could enjoy the musical light shows as we dined. To start, we nibbled on fresh, baked-in-house sourdough bread which was a treat with their soup of the day—seasonal pumpkin ginger—made from locally sourced organic pumpkin, ginger, and sage. Though I am not a fan of ginger, this soup was light on the ginger and heavy on flavor and richness. We created our own bespoke salad platter with avocado, pasta, and
feta salads on one platter. We also ordered one of my favorites: Beef Bresaola with labneh, with the beef cured here on the premises.

For our mains, I chose the pasta of the day which was tortellini stuffed with goat’s cheese and pumpkin which had just enough goats’ cheese to be well-balanced.

In between we enjoyed some healthy mojitos; one was the pomegranate mojito—a concoction of fresh pineapple, pomegranate, lime, mint, cinnamon, soda water, and honey as well as the passion fruit mojito.

The other mains we sampled were the linguini with prawns which had a creamy white sauce and just enough prawns to give it a bite. The chicken pie was probably our favorite among all of these superb dishes; it was a creamy mushroom and leeks with organic chicken encased in a huge puff pastry shell. It was a nice contrast of textures of crispy and creamy.

Desserts are listed on the menu and include fresh, homemade ice-cream, coffee crunch cake, Baked Alaska, and a Dark Chocolate Soufflé. There is also a desserts counter inside the venue where you can choose your own from the freshly baked treats, such as pumpkin pie, caramel pecan pie, apple cookie cups, glazed donuts, brownies, and more. We opted for Baked Alaska and a chocolate sundae. My Baked Alaska was a crispy meringue shell set atop of a baked cake slice with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream; it light, airy and super satisfying. The chocolate ice-cream sundae, with a large scoop of vanilla ice-cream atop a warm brownie topped with chocolate sauce was also a winner.

The Verdict: Baker & Spice is one of those perfect places you can go for a healthy breakfast, lunch or dinner that also has friendly service. The Instaworthy views of the Dubai Fountains and Burj Khalifa are an added bonus.
