Celebrating Arabic Calligraphy….Silsal’s Unique Aesthetic

Transforming the Arabic language into beautiful works of art is key to Silsal’s belief that art should be everywhere. Founded in 2014 by Samar Habayeb with headquarters in Dubai Design District, the foundation of Silsal is simple functionality, extraordinary quality, and artistic expression. She explains more…

The Team

“I felt that beautiful design shouldn’t be aspirational, but attainable, so I work tirelessly with my team to ensure prices are affordable, while remaining rigorously faithful to quality and craftsmanship.”

bowlsArabic Calligraphy

“Arabic calligraphy, a central pillar of Silsal’s unique aesthetic, isn’t just a means of communication. It has been developed over centuries as an artistic tool; decorating everything from coins to castles and books to statues. From Morocco to Iraq, Silsal’s collections not only pay homage to the beautiful calligraphic scripts from across the region, but also offer a fresh revival of calligraphy from a bygone era.”

Design Conceptualization

“Each design evolves through a series of developments, beginning with a certain region, which we study and draw inspiration from. From there, we work closely with calligraphers to bring the calligraphy of that region to life. Once we have a script we are happy with, the design team comes together to find a way to breathe new life into it. In terms of the words or phrases we choose, we tend to focus on optimistic sentiments and expressions of love or hope.”

“Arabic calligraphy is intrinsic to the cultures and aesthetics of the Middle East, and the philosophy of Silsal Design House. It was, and still is, used to transform ordinary items into artistic works. Centuries ago, weapons, tools, ceramics and homes were decorated with intricate scripts, infusing timeless beauty into ordinary life, and an ethos I hope to revive with the Silsal collections.”
