Coping with Time Zone Burnout

Many of us are traveling for our long awaited holidays and an unwanted side effect is time zone burnout. Here are some effective ways to treat this problem and ultimately, get the most out of your holiday.

Jet Lag

Jet lag appears to have the biggest impact on our health. Some of the symptoms include excessive sleepiness, fatigue, and decreased daytime alertness. When crossing time zones, if you travel east, you will lose an hour, if you travel west you will gain an hour for each time zone travelled across.

Tips to Help

  • Three days before your trip, shift your sleeping and eating times to correspond with the destination. As soon as you arrive, adopt the local time and avoid sleeping early.
  • Opt for overnight flights which will ensure you have dinner at the normal time and be much more likely to get some good sleep.
  • Ensure that you are well rested by getting a few nights of good quality sleep before you depart.
  • Have a light pre-flight meal which boosts your blood volume, blood sugar, decreases stress, and will help you get ready for the journey.
