Debunking Sun Protection

Myths As we finally face the reality that summer is here in the UAE, there are still some of us who have pre-conceived notions when it comes to sun exposure. Here are some myths and realities to help you stay safe in the sun…

Myth: Makeup with built-in SPF is just as good as a separate SPF.
Reality: For the UAE’s sun exposure, it is advisable to use pure sunscreen, preferably SPF 30 and higher, separately. Also, apply around one teaspoon of sunscreen/sunblock for the face and half a teaspoon for the neck area at least 30 to 40 minutes before sun exposure for absorption. Always reapply if you are outdoors, partaking in water sports, or after every two hours.

Myth: You only need to apply an SPF lotion on hot and sunny days.
Reality:
Even if there is less sun or cloudy weather, this does not block the UV rays. Wear sunscreen in routine every day, even if it looks cloudy or you are in the office.

Myth:
Sun exposure is the same everywhere.
Reality: Sun exposure in the UAE is different as the deserts’ sands play a much harmful role in causing damage to the skin.

Myth: Water resistant sun lotion means I can go in and out of the water safely.
Reality: Waterproof sunscreen should provide protection in the water for 80 minutes. However, water resistant sunscreen should be reapplied after 40 minutes if you have been swimming.

Myth: All sun blocks are more or less the same.
Reality: Broad spectrum offers the best protection and refers to sunscreen having a longer protection period against both UVA and UVB.
