Is Your Diet Affecting Your Skin?

Psoriasis, with its accompanying pain, soreness, itching and even burning, can often become unbearable. The good news is that low energy diets and vegetarian diets have helped psoriasis symptoms in some studies and diets supplemented with fish oil (or cod liver oil) have also shown beneficial effects.

While experts advise there is no exact diet for individuals suffering from psoriasis, there have been certain foods linked to a triggering of psoriasis symptoms.

The following are some of these foods:

  • Foods such as coffee, red meat, sugar and gluten have been known to worsen symptoms.
  • Fish, walnuts, fruits, vegetables and plenty of filtered water are recommended to keep skin in healthy.
  • Herbs that can help ease psoriasis include burdock, nettles, calendula, and chamomile.
  • Supplements that help psoriasis include vitamins A and D which are fat-soluble and work to reduce the over proliferation of skin cells.

  • Other Tips to Cope with Psoriasis:

  • Avoid using hot water when bathing; stick to lukewarm water as hot water increases the blood flow to the skin and can make psoriasis plaques more red and irritated.
  • Use a rich, hydrating moisturizer with plenty of emollients, such as glycerin and Shea butter.
  • Opt for loose-fitting, soft clothing made of lightweight natural fibers such as cotton, linen, and bamboo, which dampen perspiration and won’t rub against irritated skin.
