Eating Healthy Out of the Home

Going out with the family to any mall means great fun and in-between the aromas of freshly baked bread, mouth-watering curries, and deep-fried everything, how does one at least try to choose healthier food amidst all of that? Blogger Kanchan Bhojwani reveals her tips.

Healthy Food Swaps

  • Opt for grilled/baked meat instead of deep-fried.
  • Swap mashed potatoes/fries with sautéed vegetables or a salad.
  • Hummus with crackers and vegetables is a more nutritious appetizer than any deep-fried varieties. Any other nutritious dip with multi-grain crackers is healthy and a family pleaser.
  • Instead of fizzy colas and drinks, opt for fresh juices, fruit-flavored water, or even just plain/sparkling water.
  • Swap regular ice cream for some frozen yogurt and top it up with some nuts and fresh fruits. Just as delicious, but healthy.
  • When it comes to bread and its varieties such as pizzas, pastas, and sandwiches, ask for a whole wheat, oat, or multi-grain version which is much healthier on the waist.
  • Opt for filling salad bowls instead of the regular sandwiches.
  • Instead of opting for deep fried chicken meals for the whole family, opt for grilled chicken/meat kababs that are served with hummus, salad, and bread for the whole family. They are much more nutritious and great value for money.
  • Opt for pizza and salads without cheese and creamy sauces but with more vegetables such as broccoli and zucchini.
  • Opt for tomato based sauces rather than cream or cheese filled for pizzas and pastas. Swap stuffed crust or the thick crust for a thin crust style of pizza.
  • Salad with a lemon dressing is a better alternative than one with cream or cheese.
  • Choose healthier side dishes such as peas or seasonal vegetables or brown pilaf instead of buttered corn or deep-fried onion rings.
  • Opt for simple stir-fries instead of tempura (deep-fried) based foods.
  • Swap mayo with mustard.
