Fly-boarding… To New Heights

Want a great way to kick off the weekend? Dubai has a new water-sports hub, Fahrenheit Beachsports that has a whole host of exciting activities from wake-surfing to water-skiing, SUP yoga and now fly-boarding too. Flyboarding is fast becoming an adrenalin packed experience for a lot of people looking for a bit of watersports action.

Each session only consists of 15 to 20 minutes of tutorial or experience as any more time than that can be quite tiresome. The Flyboard is a small piece of mechanical equipment, which is attached by a long hose to a jet ski. Someone experiencing the Flyboard would be attached to it by being clipped in via a pair of boots, similar to any wakeboarding or snowboarding set up. The power of the jet ski propels the Flyboard upwards, allowing the person to be lifted up into the air. It takes a bit of practice but once the movement is understood, it’s relatively easy. If you are trying Fly-boarding for the first time, it’s really about balance and keeping your eyes on the skyline.

For example, look down at your feet or the water and your whole body moves that way. The key is to stare just above the horizon and curl your feet underneath you so that when the jet ski gives you some power, your feet naturally move underneath you into a straight legged standing position, from which you then rise above the surface of the water. Once you’re up, it’s totally different… if you so much as curl your toes, you’ll move. So relax but be firm and lock your knees as much as possible without being too rigid. With the Burj Khalifa on the skyline and a variety of restaurants around to fuel your ride, once balance is obtained, the fun begins with trying to stay high in the air, or even attempting to “dolphin dive” into the water while being propelled by the board. This is definitely worth a try for adrenalin junkies and those wanting to get active in the water.
