A Haven for Healthy Food…Sesame Restaurant

Using healthy cooking techniques and fresh organic seasonal products wherever possible in a laid back gourmet café ambiance, Sesame restaurant’s plant forward menu offers dishes from around the world to create ‘world food’.

Tucked away in Jumeirah’s niche Sunset Mall, our helpful server Bryan was on hand to explain the concept, the dishes, and make solid recommendations.

walnut-mushroom-pate_previewFor our dinner, we had the Mushroom and Walnut pate with whole meal crackers. This was rustic and mellow, and with the crispiness of the crackers, was a healthy starter. We also sampled their signature Avocado Tartare—a super alternative to the usual beef and tuna versions–with medium chunks of avocado mixed with tomato, mixed greens, and garnished with a delicious date vinaigrette and pickled ginger.

meatballs_preview And the Pomegranate Lamb meatballs were served on a bed of cauliflower couscous. This was light and the glaze and meat worked beautifully with the healthy cauliflower couscous.

Tulsi-drink_previewBeverages here are also healthy; we sampled the signature Tulsi Elixir: made from Tulsi, cardamom, and basil seeds and garnished with rose petals. This had an herbal flavor and was very refreshing. Kids ordered the Essential cold pressed juices sold here: Pineapple Powwow and Black Lemonaid.

root-salad_previewFrom the mains, we sampled Deep Root salad–a hearty and comforting salad made with carrots, potatoes, turnips, mixed greens, and an Eastern touch lent by the dressing made of ginger miso.

falafel-waffles_previewThen the superb Falafel Waffles–with parsley, coriander, and mixed vegetables–plated beautifully with homemade harissa mayo and tahini sauce.

Origami-fish_previewAnother treat was the Origami fish–sea bass, served with Japanese mushrooms, broccolini, cherry tomatoes, fennel, and ginger in a beautiful origami box.

mushroom-risotto_previewMy favorite amongst these delicious goodies was the creamy Mushroom Millet Risotto where Arborio rice was replaced by super healthy millet cooked in broth and then tempered with mixed mushrooms and herb gremolata.

Orange-polenta-cake_previewDesserts are also super healthy: the Orange Polenta Cake– made from orange, polenta, saffron, and almonds—was a dense, slightly crumbly cake drizzled with a honey labneh sauce. The other two were pots; a salted chocolate pot with cocoa nibs and salt which was a super chocolaty dense mousse with just a hint of salt to balance out the flavors. The second was a coconut pot with a crunchy granola topping with edible lime and coconut chunks.

The Verdict: Sesame is a must visit eatery that has fresh, made-from-scratch food that feels light on the stomach and is as delicious as it is good for the health. The service here is excellent and Bryan was very well informed by smart food choices.
