Indulge Your Cravings for Authentic Mexican Food at Fuego

Tucked away in one of Dubai’s coolest neighborhoods, Fuego at Souk al Bahar in Downtown Dubai is a contemporary Mexican restaurant that steers clear of Tex-Mex and instead, serves up some of the best tasting and authentic Mexican food in Dubai.

Wooden floors and dim music give off a trendy, yet comfortable vibe as upon seating, you are served fresh tortilla chips with two kinds of fresh salsa. Completely from scratch guacamole is made right at your table according to preferred taste.

0393As Mexico has a large influence in cooking styles from the Spain and other parts of Latin America, each starter selected reflected this diversity. The Tacos al Pastor were mini open face tacos with marinated chicken, garnished with a pickled chili cabbage that went well with the spicy tacos. Next, we tried the classic sea bass ceviche—or tiny chunks of fresh sea bass nestled atop fresh honeydew melon, garnished with salsa verde. To mellow out the strong fish flavors, our server poured over ‘Tiger’s Milk’–a blend of sea bass stock and ginger.  What went very well with this was the classic Chili Relleno– a fried and breaded large chili stuffed with warm cheese.

0320The must-try from the mains included the turkey breast topped with the famous ‘mole’ sauce—a complex concoction made of around 32 ingredients, one of which is chocolate.  This was garnished with grilled vegetables on top of a bed of rice. Another, the mixed seafood enchilada with two kinds of sauces—chili pisilla sauce and red mole sauce– was a treat for seafood lovers like myself. Lastly, my kids enjoyed the mixed fajitas of beef, prawns, and chicken served with beans, rice, and sour cream that came with an ample portion of soft tortillas.
Sweet treats included my all-time favorite Tres Leches cake accompanied by a cool coconut ice-cream. The portion size was perfect and the cake was deliciously creamy. This was complemented by traditional Mexican churros—crunchy and hot–served with a light chocolate sauce.

0474The highlight of the sweet treats however, was the Chocolate Fantasia, a chocolate brownie ball garnished with blueberries and guava ice-cream. Our server poured hot chocolate sauce over it and we watched the ball slowly melt.

The Verdict: If you’re craving authentic Mexican food, served elegantly in a cool, but still friendly ambiance, try Fuego.
