Make Oral Hygiene a Priority this Ramadan

It’s not something we give much thought to during Ramadan, but oral hygiene could take a backseat as we are busy in the shifts of daily routine and habits. The following are some practical tips to help you maintain your oral health during the holy month.

  • Avoid dehydrating ingredients such as caffeine and excess salt and reduce your intake of sugar.
  • Practice brushing and flossing your teeth after your meals at Iftar and Suhoor.
  • Try to avoid sticky foods, such as chocolate, some types of cereals and cheese.
  • Clean your teeth with a Miswak stick – the soft bristles on either end of the twig can be used to clean the teeth.
  • Use a tongue scraper or a cleaner to get rid of the white residue that coats the tongue.
  • Include a toothpaste with fluoride twice daily asfluoride boosts the strength of the teeth and prevents from demineralization or cavity formation.
  • Be sure to increase your water intake both at Iftar time and Suhoor time.
