Meet Dubai’s Queen of Color…Maria Dowling

Once you have had your hair colored and cut by Maria Dowling in her iconic Maria Dowling Salon, you soon figure out that she’s more than a hair colorist; rather she intuitively understands color, cuts, and the way our hair should look.

A bit of background on my hair: it was slowly turning back to its natural reddish brown and my highlights were fading into oblivion and of course, some hair damage. For this, Maria suggested we redo my entire look into a cooler ash tone. She would only lighten and lift the orange highlighted parts to a cooler tone using Olaplex, the strongest restructuring treatment on the market, mixed into the bleach. The overall look follows the ‘Ombre’ style which Maria pointed out is definitely here to stay with darker roots and lighter ends. The best part of this look is it is low maintenance and because it only requires a root touch-up every 4 to 6 weeks, it’s much less damaging.

To ensure there would be no definitive lines of color in my hair, Maria teased the roots of each strand before applying the color and after this, placed foils to generate heat to help lift the color faster. Next, my roots were colored using 6.1 by L’Oreal in the cooler range. This would cover my grey as well as introduce an entirely cooler look to my hair. Lastly were the in-between reddish strands and here, Maria applied a chocolate brown color which she checked every few minutes to ensure it didn’t go too dark.

Once the color and the foils were ready, it was time for toning; an important step to blend the colors and to help reach that perfect ash tone. Also, Olaplex 1 was applied for about 15 minutes as a treatment over the sink to help restructure it.

After Maria blow-dried my hair, I was thrilled to see my hair back to a soothing, cooler ash tone color with ash blonde highlights, created in a way that left the crown still darker, yet lighter going down. The entire look was finished with a trim in the layers. The end result was my hair looked better both in color and condition than it had in a very long time.
