Men Fighting the Clock

These days, there is a surge of interest in men visiting male spas, indulging in treatments, and using skin creams. In fact, men have shifted their perspective entirely when it comes to self-grooming and here’s why…

Gone are the days when a CEO was referred to as distinguished, with his head of steel grey hair, excess baggage under his eyes, and hanging jowls- now men understand that wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet can make them look old, tired, and appear less competitive on the job. In Dubai, men are definitely more interested in anti-aging since they now know that there are so many options with very little down time. One of the main reasons men are interested, apart from the few that want to look good out of vanity, is because generally there is now a progressive increase in life expectancy. Also, because we are more aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle coupled with advances in medical technology, our looks should reflect this trend.

The media, television and even magazines are now exerting the same kind of pressure women have faced for decades; Brad Pitt photos scream ‘washboard stomach and pearly white teeth,’ leaving men to grapple with the same gnawing insecurity that has plagued women for years. Another reason for men seeking anti-aging solutions is the Baby Boomers have reached the unfashionable age of 50. In a society that values youth, 50-year-old executives are competing with younger, fitter and more competitive 30-year-olds, who are often willing to work harder, and for less money. Psychologists have clearly demonstrated that given relatively equal qualifications, the more attractive man or woman is more likely to land the job. The baby boomers especially, are realizing that youth and looking young is a commodity even in men. In the business world, the feeling is if you look tired or do not take care of yourself, people think you cannot keep up.

Men should start applying sunscreen at a very early age, in fact even as children. Generally, a good cleansing routine using a pH balanced wash and sunscreen are a must. Men also get sufficient sleep and practice some form of stress relief such as prayer or meditation. Sleep is very important because growth hormone, which is responsible for tissue repair and regeneration in adults, is released during deep sleep.
