Mexican Food That Hits the Right Spot

Far from the Tex-Mex food most of us are accustomed to eating in Dubai, La Tablita serves up real, true authentic Mexican food. And with the soothing sounds of Spanish music in the background and Mexican graphic art on the walls, it felt like we were in Mexico from the get-go.

From tacos, ceviche, sharing items, soups, mains, and pastries, the manager created a sharing set menu that included key signature dishes served here. We began with the freshly made tortilla chips with three kinds of salsa: mild, medium, and the super fiery chili salsa. This we enjoyed with the guacamole.

Besides the mocktails on the menu, there are some traditional Mexican beverages like Horchata–a refreshing drink made with rice water and milk. Another was Jamaica, a cooling hibiscus flower beverage infused with sugar.

Next the tacos! These were not the hard shell variety, but the real thing. We enjoyed the chicken al pastor—chicken tacos, and the beef camerone–beef tacos; both encased in soft shells. Our next dish was my top pick; the camarones al ajillo; a flavorful medley of shrimp, garlic, mushrooms, and chili guajillo with hints of lime and butter. Then thesea bass ceviche was muted in tangy and chili elements, and garnished with red radish.

Next, we indulged in what I call Mexican comfort food; enchiladas verde, or chicken enchiladas smothered in a delicious green tomato sauce. Also, everyone’s favorite fajitas were served with chicken, beef, and shrimp, topped with onions and bell peppers and served with flour tortillas, accompanied by Spanish rice and refried beans.

From the mains, we had lamb tenderloin that had been marinated in lime and serrano chili, served with Spanish rice and tiny tortillas. It was moist and packed with flavor.

Who can resist Mexican dessert? I certainly cannot and we loved their Tres Leches or three milks-condensed, evaporated, and whole– soaked into a glorious sponge cake, topped with candied jalapeno for a kick and a sliver of crunchy peanut brittle. Then the churros; warm, freshly fried crispy pastry sticks coated with crunchy sugar and cinnamon and served with dark chocolate syrup.

Final Verdict: La Tablita is a great place to take your entire family for a relaxed, yet authentic Mexican meal. The service is super friendly and the food is as Mexican as it comes.
