The Musings of a Makeup Artist

Haneen Odeh, Beauty Journalist for The Makeup Editor talks social media trends and Dubai’s unique style….

Changing the Face of Beauty

“I find social media to be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it has made it accessible for many women when learning how to do their own makeup flawlessly. On the other hand, that’s exactly the problem. Most women end up looking all the same because they over correct, over contour, over everything. So yes, it makes it easier to keep up with the trends, but it also makes everyone look a little less unique.”

Dubai’s Unique Beauty

“I think the stereotype of heavy makeup in the Middle East versus the West still stands true. I love how put together women in Dubai are. You can really get away with smoky eyes or lashes during the day, whereas in Europe it would look out of place. I also think that the West is more interested in skincare versus color cosmetics, but that is slowly changing in the Middle East as well.”

Move Over Highlighting and Contouring

“More than highlighting and contouring, 2017 will be less perfect and more smudged in terms of eyes, and experimental in terms of lips. But who knows? All it takes is one celebrity rocking something different, and a new trend is born.”

Top Beauty Products Women Should Carry

“I think if you do your makeup correctly, you don’t need a whole lot of products with you in your handbag. But I think some powder to blot out oily t-zones after midday, a lipstick for touch ups, or balm for bare lips, and a small perfume or deodorant to refresh yourself after a long day. Also, a pair of tweezers and a nail file is a must. You never know when you will need to fix a chipped nail or pick out a splinter.”
