Taking Care of Your Tresses the Right Way

With celebrities creating a buzz about the latest hair care fads, many of us jump the bandwagon, not really sure if what we are doing is actually good for our hair. To help, Maria Dowling, Creative Director of Mariadowling Salon in Dubai, debunks some of the most common hair myths to help you regain your crowning glory.

Myth: A keratin treatment is perfect for everyone

Fact: Keratin, says Dowling, is not for everyone. For example, it will make fine hair look limp.  If your hair isn’t super thick or super curly, go for a Keratin Botox treatment to keep the body in your hair, but to smooth out the frizz.

Fact: The cheaper the shampoo, the less kind it is on the hair, which is why choosing the right shampoo is so important, reminds Dowling. Cheaper shampoos tend to have more detergent in them.

Myth: I can shampoo and blow-dry daily

Fact: Even with heat protectors, Dowling does not recommend blow drying your hair daily as it will cause damage to the hair, regardless of how much you protect it.

Myth:
Hair should be trimmed every six months

maria-14Fact: A regular hair trim will keep the hair looking healthy, in shape, and helps avoid split ends. Dowling recommends every 8 weeks.

Myth: Sunlight does not damage the hair

Fact: Sun does damage the hair when the hair is not protected. It’s as vulnerable to sun damage as the skin, so when you’re slicking on that SPF, don’t forget to use an SPF for the hair too. A great way to keep your hair in good condition when sunbathing is to put a treatment onto the hair and wrap it in a high bun.  Rinse off at the end of the day. You’ll have gorgeous, soft, and undamaged locks.
