Treating Back and Neck Pain the Right Way

Recently awarded by ‘The Times’ of London as Britain’s Top Back Specialist, Garry Trainer, Doctor of Osteopathy and a Bachelor of Acupuncture is Dubai’s latest expert who applies a unique holistic treatment to treat all kinds of back and neck related ailments.

Combination Approach
By applying massage, acupuncture, and osteopathy, Trainer asserts it is the combination approach he uses brings back pain sufferers relief.  He explains, “The combination of treatment means you can get to the muscular skeletal and nervous systems all at once.  I try to apply the right and most appropriate technique for the presenting problem.”

Back Pain in Children
According to Trainer, increasingly worrying now is the rise in back pain in children.  “I see quite a few children and young people every week,” he tells, “it has been said that our modern sedentary lifestyle is the new epidemic.” In fact, sitting at a desk all day, inside the office is definitely worse for wear and tear on the body, than doing manual labor, and there is a higher incidence of back pain among office workers than there is among more manual workers.  Movement, adds Trainer, keeps you mobile and if you are stationary for too long you will develop immobility problems. He adds, “I think standing desks could very well be the way forward in modern offices.”

Overusing Technology
One of the most common complaints Trainer has observed recently is upper back and neck pain due to the use or over-use of mobile devices – phones, tablets, even large televisions on the wall that you have to look up to and computers.  He elaborates, “Vertebraes in the neck can become locked or stuck which affects the muscle and nerve function, causing symptoms even down the arms, including pins and needles in the fingers.  The over flexing of the head can stretch muscles in the neck and upper back, making them weaker and less able to support the head.”

With these patients, he works to improve the muscle tone of the neck which can be done by instructing them to interlock their fingers around the back of their necks and asking them to push backwards against resistance.  By resisting a movement, you make the muscles contract, which adds strength to them.

Advice
Trainer advises, “The best way to reduce the likelihood of back pain developing is to keep the back supple and mobile. Therefore, stretching the back is important. Lying flat on your back is probably the safest way to stretch because the back is not weight bearing.  I also recommend stretching in bed first thing in the morning when you wake up.”
