Treating Pre-Menstrual Symptoms (PMS) with Ayurveda

Many women suffer from PMS and turn to medication to treat the associated symptoms. Yet Yogi Ashwini, an authority on the Vedic Sciences,  explains in Ayurvedic physiology, it’s the ‘doshic’ imbalance of the ‘vata’ accompanied by inequities of the ‘pitta’ and the ‘kapha’ that is responsible for menstrual disorders.

Symptoms

Symptoms of PMS include: pain in the abdomen, tenderness in the breasts, headache, dizziness, diarrhea, fatigue, mild depression, and forgetfulness, lack of concentration, irritability, restlessness, and increased craving. Menstrual disturbances in turn heighten a women’s emotional aggravation. Other diseases like acidity, gas trouble, migraine, and arthritic pains often get aggravated during an episode of PMS.

Alternative Treatments for PMS

  • Consume light, but nutritious and easily digestible food, cutting out caffeine, reducing excessive use of tea, sugar, and salt and also avoid fried and junk food.
  • The herb shatavari should be taken regularly as it nourishes the female reproductive organs and cleanses the blood.  Three grams of its powder can be taken in a cup of warm milk sweetened with raw sugar.  It prevents bloating, excess bleeding, and mood swings.
  • In the case of delayed cycles, crush half a teaspoon of dill seeds and steep them in a glass of water. Strain out the seeds and drink it.
  • Unripe papaya helps the contractions of the muscle fibers of the uterus and is thus helpful in securing a proper menstrual flow. Papaya is especially useful when menstruation ceases due to stress.
  • In case of excessive bleeding, take six grams of coriander seeds and boil them in half a liter of water. Add sugar to this and drink it while it’s still warm.
