Is reading a genuine form of therapy? Can reading really assist people taking charge of their mental health and well-being? Reading has a positive impact on our overall mental health and stress management, it makes us think beyond ourselves, aligning our personal decision-making and thought processes with the characters, worlds, and stories we are exploring.

De-stress with a book

According to a study from 2009 by the University of Sussex in England, reading can reduce stress levels by 68 percent. The university’s study monitored stress levels and heart rates while trying out a plethora of relaxation techniques, including listening to music, going for a walk, and having a cup of tea –amongst others. Reading stood out as the best way for the brain to relax.

Read a book instead of counting sheep

According to Mayo Clinic, reading before bed can actually boost our sleep. This doesn’t mean that reading makes us fall asleep, but it does contribute to improving our overall sleep patterns and restfulness. Books are great company at night before bedtime and choosing a good book and reading it in bed can be incredibly relaxing. This is particularly key as poor sleep and depression are very closely linked. According to the Sleep Health Foundation, treating one condition can improve the other.

Boosting brain power

Much like physical activity exercises our cardiovascular system; reading regularly improves memory function by giving our brains a good work out. Age brings a gradual decline in memory and brain function, but regular reading may help slow the process. Concentrating on words and the storyline stimulates brain activity and sharpens the mind, especially focus and critical thinking. Books increase our emotional intelligence and make it easy relate to others and choosing to read regularly brings benefits which help both your mind and body navigate life.
