With Love From Russia…Tanuki Offers the Best Sushi in Dubai

When you think of Russia, you seldom think of sushi, but the guys at Tanuki have nailed the formula down for the freshest sushi with that special Tanuki twist at their venue in Dubai Mall.

Tanuki has a cool interactive robot to greet customers at the door, where he speaks and even has a menu for patrons to peruse before entering. The venue is relaxed and casual and has lots of seating, indoors and outside near the Dubai Fountains. There are some lovely large cherry blossom trees dotting the area, as well as an open kitchen. Silvia, the General Manager of Tanuki was on hand to greet us and to explain the concept of the brand which has 65 branches in Moscow alone, one in Miami, and this one in Dubai. It boasts a Pan-Asian menu with an emphasis on freshly cooked Chinese and Japanese food.

We started with the Tanuki Yam which was a twist on the traditional Tom Yam soup, but was served a small pot of jasmine rice. We tried their seaweed salad served with accompanying cashew nut paste which was divine.

Of the massive variety of sushi and sashi/maki rolls on offer, we opted for the Arigato—the shrimp, arugula, avocado, cucumber, and unagi sauce, which Silvia informed us was made in-house. It was creamy, smooth and probably the best sushi we have ever eaten. The Mango Pleasure was another standout—a mix of seafood, cream cheese, mango and unagi sauce. The Alaska was a great one with a mix of crab, pineapple, avocado, and spicy mango sauce. The Tanuki Togase—a warm signature maki with lightly seared salmon, eel, with cream cheese was another stand-out.

And just when we thought we had tried every kind of sushi/maki on the plant; here comes Tempura nori which was fried and crispy, with a warm crab mix avocado, tempura, yuzu and unagi sauce. I felt like I was in a whimsical world of endless amounts of delicious sushi!

For our mains, we tried the beef teriyaki with chicken fried rice, egg noodles with seafood, and we also tucked into a baby spinach salad with croutons and prawns that was light and refreshing.

The desserts followed in the same pattern as the food; maki rolls translated into sweet treats as well as the Asian traditional puddings and ice-creams.

The Verdict: Tanuki has maintained the core integrity of the Asian aspect in their food, but tiny add-ons, like using more eel and the generous use of mayonnaise are characteristically Russian elements which make the food all the more interesting. If you enjoy superb quality sushi and Pan-Asian food, come here with the entire family for a delicious meal served by super friendly staff.
